Close Your Eyes, Love Lullabies of the Celtic Lands
Irish harpist and vocalist Áine Minogue’s (On-ya Mi-nohg) latest album is a collection of mostly traditional Celtic Lullabies from the Celtic Lands. Comprising five instrumental and five vocal tracks, (three in English, one in Gaelic and one in Welsh), Minogue is
primarily accompanied by long time collaborator and coproducer
Scott Petito (The Band, Bela Flec) on bass
keyboards and guitar, and grammy award-winning cellist
Eugene Friesen.
The creator of twelve original Celtic music albums,
including Between the Worlds, The Twilight Realm and
Winter, A Meditation, Áine Minogue “combines a hypnotic
Celtic spirituality and contemporary sophistication in her
playing and delicately lovely singing.” BOSTON GLOBE
Minogue’s main instrument is the harp and in the ancient
Irish harping tradition, there were three primary genres of
music, geantraí, (songs of laughter) goltraí, (songs of
sorrow) and suantraí or ‘songs of sleep.’ These lullabies
are among the most beautiful in the tradition and were
created for people of all ages.
Says Minogue “Faith systems are always fascinating.
Today, we believe medicine is the answer to falling asleep.
Back then, they truly believed in the power of a melody to
put you under. That’s a powerful thing, to have that kind
of faith in music.”
“Áine Minogue proves beyond reasonable doubt why the harp is
indeed the instrument of angels” LA TIMES
“Minogue’s ethereal voice caresses her Gaelic lyrics like a breeze
through Irish mists… .Áine Minogue is close enough to her
Celtic sources to be nourished by them, but not so close that they
root her to the spot” BILLBOARD MAGAZINE
