Irish Film & TV Awards Announced

  The winners of the 9th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards were announced at a Gala Awards Ceremony held at the Convention Centre Dublin on Saturday 11th of February 2012.

Speaking at the ceremony IFTA Chief Executive Áine Moriarty said “In what has been a wonderful night of celebration for the Irish film and television industry, IFTA is delighted to announce the winners of the 9th Irish Film & Television Awards.  Ireland’s film and television industry continues to punch above its weight in terms of production values, creativity and entertainment and the outstanding achievements of Irish directors, writers, actors, television and film makers has been showcased here this evening. Many congratulations to all of this year’s winners and nominees.”

Irish crime-drama Love/Hate took home seven awards including IFTAs for Best Drama, Best Director David Caffrey and Writer TV Stuart Carolan.  Love/Hate actors Aidan Gillen, Denise McCormack and Tom Vaughan Lawlor received IFTAs for Actor Lead TV Drama, Actress Support TV Drama and Actor Support TV Drama respectively, with the series’ seventh IFTA going to editor Isobel Stephenson.

President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins presented veteran Irish actress Fionnula Flanagan with the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award, and she received a standing ovation from the 1,400 strong audience at Dublin’s CCD. In addition, the actress took home a second IFTA statuette for her supporting role in the Irish feature film The Guard. Winning big in the film categories, The Guard also received the IFTA for Best Film, with writer/director John Michael McDonagh named Best Director, Best Screenwriter and the Irish Film Board Rising Star for his feature directorial debut.
Irish talent working on international projects fared well at this year’s Awards Ceremony with Michael Fassbender on hand to accept the IFTA for Actor Lead Film for his outstanding performance in Steve McQueen’s Shame. Bridesmaids star Chris O’Dowd was presented with the Actor Support Film award for his performance in the hit comedy film.  Actresses Saoirse Ronan won for her Lead performance as teen assassin in Joe Wright’s Hanna, whilst Ruth Negga accepted the IFTA for her portrayal of Shirley Bassey in the BBC biopic.  Northern Irish Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey was presented with the DOP Film/Drama award for his work on We Need to Talk About Kevin and Consolata Boyle took home the Costume IFTA for her designs in The Iron Lady.

Anna Rackard won her second career IFTA for her work on rural Irish drama Stella Days and the Oscar nominated Irish period drama Albert Nobbs received four Awards from the Irish Academy winning International Actress Glenn Close, Best Sound, Make-up and Hair for Lynn Johnston & Lorraine Glynn and Original Score for Brian Byrne. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won the IFTA for Best International Film while Ryan Gosling was voted Best International Actor for Drive.

In the Irish Academy’s newly introduced television categories; best Reality Programme went to ICA Bootcamp; the Dermot Healy arts documentary The Writing in the Sky received two IFTAs - Television Director Gary Keane and Television Sound. Ray Roantree won the TV Editing award for The Ashes of 9/11 and Waterways cinematographer Peter Robertson was presented the IFTA for Director of Photography Television. Waterways also took home the IFTA for Best Documentary Series. Elsewhere in the factual categories, The George Morrison Feature Documentary Award was presented to Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey; TV Documentary was won by Blood of the Travellers; Best Factual Programme went to The Only Viking in the Village and Prime Time Investigates: The Home Care Scandal received the IFTA for Current Affairs / News.

The IFTA for Best Sport was awarded to Eamonn Coghlan: Man on a Mission and other popular winners on the night included BBC/RTÉ’s comedy series Mrs Brown’s Boys (Entertainment), the modern adaptation of the Oscar Wilde classicThe Importance of Being Whatever (Children’/Youth) and TG4’s drama Corp + Anam (Special Irish Language). The Philips Short Film Award was won by Lorcan Finnegan’s Foxes and Kealan O’Rourke’s animated short film The Boy in the Bubble received the IFTA for Best Animation.

Finally, the RTÉ Guide Best TV Moment of 2011 was also announced at the ceremony with the Irish public voting Shamrock Rovers’ momentous Europa League Goal on Setanta Sports the overall winner. 

Hosted by Simon Delaney and broadcast primetime on Irish television on RTÉ One, the Annual Irish Film & Television Awards are the highlight of Ireland’s entertainment and cultural calendar celebrating the very best of Irish screen talent across film and television. Other guests walking the red carpet this evening’s event included Brenda Fricker, Brían F. O’Byrne, Jim Sheridan, Dana Delany, Stephen Rea, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Liam Cunningham, Emmett J. Scanlan, Rupert Wyatt, AJ Buckley, Amy Huberman, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Colin Morgan, Martin McCann, Charlene McKenna, Armand Assante, Allen Leech, Pat Shortt, Thaddeus O’Sullivan, Marcella Plunkett and Bronagh Gallagher.
